Leonardo DiCaprio addressed the world leaders assembled for the United Nations Climate Summit in 2014 and urged them to address ‘the greatest challenge of our existence on this planet.’ In what some called the ‘speech of the year’, Leonardo DiCaprio impressed world leaders and activists alike with his impassioned address on climate change. He pointed out that the world was running out of time to tackle climate change.

A poster should have:

- A simple and clear layout

- All important information such as  date, time, location, contact name, and telephone number, if necessary.

- A striking element like a headline or an image to catch other peoples  attention.

- The most important message is to be emphasized by size, colour or value.

- The wordings and imagery are to be logically and functionally sequenced.

• Use bold intense colours to enhance the message.

• Use the present tense.

The teacher may ask the learners to come out with their own ideas. He/She can add if something is left out.  The teacher may guide them to prepare posters for preserving nature and protecting the environment.

You need to plan and prepare well before  you attempt to speak at a public gathering.  Good speeches depend on delivery and   the effort put into it by the speaker. A good  speech is made for a good reason.

- To lead to action

'A good welcome speech unites and sets  the tone for an event.' The welcome

speech sets the mood of the function. It   marks the start of any special event or

occasion which requires a formal opening.  The focus is always the audience and the   goal is to make them look forward to  whatever is coming next.

All good speeches require a shape.

- Provide background information about why they have assembled/state

the purpose of the meeting.

- Specifically acknowledge and welcome important guests.

v  PASSIVE VOICE

The passive voice is used to focus upon the person or object that experiences an

action rather than the person or object that performs the action.

Examples

• The house was built in 2014. (= we are interested in the house, not in who built it.)

• The road is being repaired. (= we are interested in the road, not in the people who are doing the repair.)

Functions of the passive voice:  In the passive, the person or thing that the action was done to becomes  important. In some cases we can leave out the 'doer' or agent(by him/her/us/them/ people/me, etc or when the agent is  not important) or we can place the 'doer' in a prepositional phrase (by + 'doer'):

These houses were designed in the 1950s. (passive without agent)

These houses were designed in the 1950s by Charles Correa. (passive + by + agent)
